My Defecathartic Weekend

So, I was all excited about CES and blogging my butt off about it until, on day two, I caught a stomach bug that knocked me on my ass for the weekend. The wind blasted straight out of my sails! Still, though, day one was great and there were a lot of interesting things at CES I’m sure to be commenting about over the next couple of days.

CES 2010 Day One

I’ve been seeing reviews and previews for a lot of great pieces of tech at CES so far today; one of which I may even purchase later this year. So far, CES seems to be more oriented toward innovations and improvements to existing concepts this year. Considering the state of the economy, that’s not a bad idea at all. So, without further ramble, my thoughts on a couple of things I’ve seen this year.

PopBox
PopBox is an internet video receiver for your television/home entertainment system. Jim Louderback went over it well for Tekzilla today, explaining its features and demonstrating its interface. Its backside appears to have standard A/V jacks, an HDMI port, an ethernet port, an optical port, a USB port and an SD card slot. The front has an additional USB port. It will reportedly retail for a sweet $129 this March. Pending the early and mid adopters don’t scream for vengeance over flaws that are at this point hidden, I intend to grab this beauty up for the next holiday season.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook/tablet
This innovation begins as a tablet running a customized Skylight Linux distribution on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPU with a 16GB SSD. As a tablet, it appears to be a friendly, smooth device, but somewhat standard fare. However, this tablet comes with a notebook shell to dock into. When you dock the tablet, it pops over to Windows 7 Home Premium on a CULV Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in seconds. While this idea seems good, I have one main concern about the implementation: reboot. Every time you dock and undock, you are booting a new OS. I will avoid adoption of this concept until one can smoothly dock and undock their hybrid device without any form of reboot, maintaining open work in a seamless transition. Despite my concern, however, the IdeaPad U1 is a step in the right direction.

Effective Immortality

I envision myself 80-90 years old with a frail and failing body, watching my twenty year old cloned body being prepared for brain transplant. The anesthesia comes into my bloodstream through an IV and the world fades to black. I don’t really have any perception of time or much else, but from nowhere I hear the doctor’s voice in the distance. It begins to come in to focus. I open my eyes. God, they feel so new. Everything is so clear. Feeling comes back in to my body and I feel so young and strong. With help, I sit up. I feel twenty years old again. Physically, I am. Thank you, Dr. Cumaean.

This is effective immortality. This is, potentially, a possibility. What hurdles must be overcome to achieve it/ Should we even do this, at the risk of upsetting the balance of nature in the life-death cycle? How probable it is can be questioned and debated; it should be discussed.

CES 2010 Is Coming

Every year, I get excited like a little school girl for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV. I am nowhere near there, but I monitor the major tech content outlets for their reports, broadcasts and adventures at CES through the weekend. I love technology, gadgetry and the sense of wonder involved in previewing new concoctions and contraptions.

Emp(a)t(h)y After

I have not written and posted a blog entry in some time. Perhaps it is my busy schedule. Perhaps I just feel uninspired and unmotivated to do so. Perhaps I just have nothing left in me at the end of my day. That is too bad, indeed, because I love this wintry weather and it typically inspires me to no end. Where, then, has my creativity gone?

Maybe the shorter winter days are once more taking their toll on my brain chemistry. This occurred much in my early teens, and possibly into my childhood. It cannot be the lack of light insofar as my liking persists, as I have a deep affection for the night and its inherent beauty. Perhaps the root of this is a vitamin D deficiency from the lessened sunlight. I can only speculate the cause and try to counter it by taking in more D fortified foods and forcing myself to creative outlets.

I confess to having heard a leak of the new Ihsahn album due out on the 26th, After. I will be buying this without a second thought. It is easily his best solo effort. I recommend it to the world.

I should have been a scientist.
